Social Networking 102: What’s All the Tweeting About?

If you’ve never heard of Facebook, then you’re very unlikely to be interacting with many folks in the modern workforce – or to be keeping up with popular media of any kind. Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and MySpace have become so widely used that there is now a whole generation of “digital natives” who see little – if any – issue with having some of their relationships be entirely virtual. On the other hand, if you’re a “digital immigrant” who was dragged kicking and screaming to email, you might be likely to see online interactions as a pernicious erosion of “real” face-to-face ones. Regardless of where you come down on the “is it a good thing” question, the bottom line is that you should know who the major players are in this area.

Before even getting into the companies that provide these services, it’s important to realize that there are a dizzying variety of blogs, forums, chat rooms, games, and simulations out there on the Internet. The topics they deal with and the quality of the interactions they provide is a matter of personal choice, but it would be a mistake to think that the social networking buck stops with Facebook just because they have the largest market share.

Facebook (facebook.com) offers a slick, easy-to-use service that links over 400 million people worldwide. The networking happens among “friends” who agree to share their information with each other. The interface includes a number of different media including intra-FB email, instant messaging, posting messages on your wall as well as your friends, shared photo albums, and much more.

Twitter allows users to send and receive brief 140-character messages instantly to anyone who “follows” them. Following someone (and having followers) allows you to get real-time, bite-sized blurbs of their ongoing experiences – and they’re all recorded. In the same way that Googling someone is now basically an HR requirement to vet resumes, following a prospect on Twitter is hot on its tail. Note that the message you send/receive is a “tweet,” and the act of sending it is called “tweeting.”

LinkedIn is basically a professional version of Facebook in that it targets professionals looking to network with each other. You can belong to an HR thread, seek out other people with your job title in your geographical area, and even post resumes.

These three specific examples of social networking services are just the tip of the iceberg, but if you don’t know much about them, you might try setting up an account to see if the virtual shoe fits. But one thing to keep in mind – virtually nothing you do on these sites is private. This fact has led to some people getting into hot water at work as a result of what they thought was “personal” virtual behavior. We’ll return to that theme later – next time we’ll cover how social networking facilitates informal learning in a variety of organizations.

For now, I’m out like Friendster.

The Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC) has approved our new Customized Employment Courses

The Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC) recently approved 5 new courses on the subject of Customized Employment. These courses are based on the work of Griffin-Hammis Associates, leaders in the field of employment supports for people with disabilities and other complex support needs. There is a set of five courses called Creating Community Careers. Part 1 is an introduction to Customized Employment. Part II is about Discovering Personal Genius. Part III is Customized Job Development. Part IV is Interest Based Negotiation and Part V is on Systematic Instruction.

These five courses teach you how to support people to start their own businesses customized to their unique characteristics and needs. This set of employment courses are "must haves" for anyone involved in supporting people to find employment.

The employment courses are part of our growing emphasis on personalized supports for people with disabilities and other challenges--helping people with disabilities to live, work, and be a part of their communities just like everyone else.

We now have 59.5 training hours of CRCC approved course work!

Have you ever said or heard anything similar to these comments? If so, you’ll be pleased to know that you’re in step with the social networking zeitgeist that’s rapidly expanding personal as well as professional horizons. If not, you’ll benefit from familiarizing yourself with the front-burner issues that are currently developing at the intersection of online communication and organizational practices.

This is the first in a series of blog posts dedicated to covering what online social networking is all about- with an emphasis on how it’s playing out in today's workplace. Just by virtue of having found this post on EL Connect, you’re already well on your way to understanding how this phenomenon is expanding horizons – and presenting unprecedented risks. So let’s dive in with the broadest question and go from there.

What exactly is “social networking?”

Fundamentally, social networking involves building relationships and sharing knowledge – regardless of the medium (e.g. phone, face-to-face, blog, etc). Networking, formal learning, and informal learning are critical to any employee’s success. The same is true for personal lives, and such networking is increasingly taking place online as well as in-person.

This way of meeting and relating to others online is now a widely-accepted practice with proven business applications including marketing, sales, advertising, research, and internal communications. However, if you or your organization don’t know the facts about best – and worst - practices in online social networking, your efforts might miss the mark. You could also end up with legal troubles on your hands!

Save some time, convert to online! Yes, that does rhyme….

I just wanted to pass along another "creative use of E-learning" that I’m sure many of you are already doing but some of you haven’t gotten around to it yet. Convert some of your live classes into an online course.

I know what you’re thinking, "but those topics are always managed through a live class because:
we need to practice a skill
have the interaction with each other
it’s part of new hire orientation and the face to face evaluation/interaction is important
it's the only way I'll know they are really paying attention and learning something

And I don’t disagree with any of those (well, maybe that last one); there are many training topics that are better managed through a live class, especially if there is a hands-on component. A good example is physical restraints. Depending on your business/industry, there is often a training for some or all staff about how to do physical restraints safely, how to intervene with a client/inmate when the situation escalates and physically restrain someone without causing injury or violating one of many rules that I’m sure govern physical contact with clients.

However, I’m guessing that training includes a good introduction at the outset, the educational piece before we get into the skill portion (teaching the skill, demonstration and practice). To continue with our example, there is probably a section on paying attention to low level cues, opportunities to intervene before physical is necessary, staying aware, other interventions to try, etc. That part of the training would be easily converted into an online format. You probably have a great PowerPoint or other talking points visual aid that you use that could easily be expanded upon and converted into an online class.

Even better, using the Assembler tool you can create a live class/event, upload your content as a section and then attendees would register for the class like any other live class, however they would need to complete the online portion first and then come to class for the second part of training.

The class itself would still be worth the same number of hours to the user and when the live training is complete, I would log in and mark everyone who attended as complete and they would get the correction date of completion and hours of credit on their transcript.

But now, as the trainer, I don’t conduct a two hour live class, I conduct a one hour class and have more time to do other things. If you’re like me, you have a to-do list that never ends and a little more time every week or every month is pretty good to have.

You’ve probably heard the phrase "blended learning" a lot from us at Essential Learning, and this is a great practical example of doing just that. It’s a win-win for everyone…class attendees and you. But most of all, you!

Step 5: Create the Test

Assessment of student learning is essential to know whether learning has occurred and if remediation is necessary. Online quizzes can be used to assess student learning.

Because of the possibility of immediate feedback, online quizzes are sometimes integrated into course design to offer students opportunities for self-assessment and review.

There are several ways to quiz learners in online courses. These include:

· multiple choice questions

· true/false questions

· matching questions to answers

· fill-in-the-blank questions

· short answer questions

· essay questions

Here are some tips for writing good test questions:

Use clear, precise, simple language (avoid humor, jargon, cliché).
Write assessment questions at the apply level rather than the remember level.
Each question should represent a complete thought and be written as a coherent sentence.
Assure there is only one interpretation of meaning and one correct or best response.
All responses should be written clearly, similar in content, length and grammar.
Make distractors (alternative choices) plausible and equally attractive for students who do not know the material.
Don’t make the correct answer longer or more detailed than the distractors.
Avoid terms such as “always’ or “never,’ as they generally signal incorrect choices.

Enforcement of Red Flags Rule delayed until December 31, 2010

At the request of several members of Congress, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced that it will delay the enforcement of the Red Flags Rule until December 31, 2010, while Congress considers legislation that would affect the scope of entities covered by the Rule.

The “red flags” rule became law on Jan. 1, 2008, and full compliance originally was required by Nov. 1, 2008. That deadline was pushed back until Nov. 1, 2009, and then again to June 1, 2010.

The Rule was developed under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, in which Congress directed the FTC and other agencies to develop regulations requiring “creditors” and “financial institutions” to address the risk of identity theft. The resulting Red Flags Rule requires all such entities that have “covered accounts” to develop and implement written identity theft prevention programs to help identify, detect, and respond to patterns, practices, or specific activities – known as “red flags” – that could indicate identity theft.

We will be updating all of the related HIPAA courses to reflect the delay of enforcement.

Hitting the alligators closest to the boat…

We often ask customers why they purchased EL, what prompted them to implement a Learning Management System, what they hope to achive, etc.
Usually we hear responses like:
budget/financial, easily and efficiently administer training, better track requirements, and to report to state, accreditation body or some other regulatory agency.

During implementation, one person or maybe even a couple of people find the time to add to their full time jobs, the task of learning how to use the LMS and set it up. We have broken up our process into small steps, training in chunks and adding to your knowledge as we move through implementation so you don't have to drop everything for a full day(s) of training. But then once it's up and running, the basics are set up, implementation ends...what next?

We hear over and over from customers
"I need to be in the system more"
"if I had more time I'd set up [fill in the feature name of your choice]"
"I didn't realize the system had [fill in the feature name] functionality"
or my favorite "I'm busy with another project right now, when things settle down I'll spend more time EL".

Ironically enough, we are struggling to find the time to administer the time saving LMS that will give us more time to do other tasks...

It seems that many of us, me included, easily end up spending each day hitting the alligators closest to the boat and not spending any time on draining the swamp. Some days, to switch analogies on you, it's even worse and I have a treadmill day; man I was working hard, going, going, going but didn't seem to get anywhere. (if you're sitting in front of your computer nodding your head, then you know what I'm talking about and you're probably thinking, "I'm too busy to read this darn blog!")

Making the time for your Essential Learning LMS every week is the key to benefitting from it. You can turn that negative loop into a positive one

Remind yourself why you chose Essential Learning
Ask yourself what goals you were hoping to achieve when you started implementation
Evaluate if you are there yet and if not, what needs to happen

For most of us, we're doing pretty well.

It's saving us money for sure, saving us a little bit of time and we use it for a lot of things. We just aren't using it for everything we could be. Many of you know all the features you could be using, even if you're not using all of them, which is better than some of us that don't even realize we could be uploading old training data or using the system to keep track of live classroom trainings and non-training, tracking items like certifications.

After you have taken the five minutes to remind yourself why you are using EL, what your purpose and goals are, ask yourself this:

"what would I do if I had an extra 5 hours per week to work on EL?"

That's one hour per day for most of us. Now, let's be realistic, we don't have an extra hour per day, but we could probably come up with one hour per week and elicit the help of other managers and supervisors and come up with 2-3 hours per week of time spent "administering" the site.

Force yourself to put EL on your to do list every week, get others involved in the job of administering the site, add additional "supervisors" to the site or even another administrator or two if necessary and then break up the tasks and assign them out. If you wait until you have four uninterrupted hours to work on EL, it will likely never happen...and I mean that with the most respect. WE are all very busy, juggling multiple projects, tasks and even job titles, and finding that chunk of "down time" to work on a project is just not realistic or feasible, for most of us.

We all need to be reminded that occasionally, no matter how busy or stressed out we are, there is a benefit to switching from hitting alligators to draining the swamp for a few minutes every day.

Now where is my oar? Back to work....

No, the Essential Learning reports will not contain any information on Prescriber's Letter or CME. However, you are able to create a tracking course in Essential Learning and track your prescribers' completion of CMEs.

If I purchase CMEs for a prescriber and the prescriber leaves my agency, can I transfer the CMEs to a different prescriber?

No, unused CMEs cannot be transferred after purchase.

How do I purchase CME for a prescriber at my agency?

If you are currently in implementation, please contact your Implementation Project Manager. You can also open a customer support ticket.

What information will I need to provide in order to purchase CME for a prescriber?

You will need to provide us with the prescriber's first and last name, your organization name, prescriber's mailing address including city, state and zip code, email address of prescriber, and the type of prescriber (i.e. physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, etc). After 7 days, your prescriber will be able to log into Essential Learning, select the Prescriber's Letter button in the news feed and starting earning CME.

If I purchase CMEs for a prescriber, what will the prescriber see?

After you have purchased CME for a prescriber, the prescriber will log into Essential Learning and click on the Prescriber's Letter button in the news feed. This will take the prescriber to the Prescriber's Letter website. At the Prescriber's Letter website, the prescriber will have access to the monthly issue of "CME-in-the-Letter." Each CME-in-the-letter contains 12+ articles. Every article has it's own Detail-Document. There are CME quiz questions on 8 of these articles every month. After the prescriber has successfully completed the CME quiz questions, he/she will be able to print the statement of completion. The statement of completion will be available for re-printing. The statement of completion contains the prescriber's name and mailing address, city, state and zip code. It is very important that you provide us with the prescriber's first and last name and mailing address exactly as you would like it to appear on their statement of completion.

Approved Continuing Education for Licensed Professional Counselors in New Jersey

I had a question inquiring why Essential Learning does not have a distinct approval for continuing education for Professional Counselors in New Jersey. The board accepts continuing education programs that are approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), the American Psychological Association (APA), the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), The National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) and the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselors Certification (CRCC). Essential Learning has obtained approval by these organizations and has courses approved by each of these organizations, so a Professional Counselor may choose courses designated as approved by any of these organizations to fulfill their continuing education requirements.
